AI as a first draft engine for marketing copy

The five-minute AI briefing for business owners who have better things to do.

The problem before the tool

Most business owners know they should be doing more marketing. They just do not do it. The blank page is hard, and a good evening gets eaten trying to write one email that never quite sounds right.

This issue is about that.

The one thing that mattered this week

AI as a first-draft engine for marketing copy.

The most practical thing AI does for small business marketing is remove the blank-page problem. If you can describe what you are selling, who you are selling it to, and what you want the reader to do next, a decent AI tool will produce a working draft in under a minute.

The output will not be great. It will be slightly generic. But it is faster to edit a mediocre draft than to write from nothing, and for most owners, that gap is exactly what stops them from marketing consistently.

Here is where it actually helps:

Email campaigns. Give it the offer, the audience, and the action you want. It returns a subject line and a body copy. You edit it.

Social posts. Give it the topic and the platform. It adjusts length and tone for LinkedIn versus Facebook versus Instagram. You tweak it.

Ad copy. Give it the product, the audience, and the character limit. It produces three or four variations to test. You pick the one that sounds most like you.

Follow-up sequences. Describe the trigger: someone came to your event, downloaded something, made an inquiry. It drafts the sequence. You check the timing and edit the words.

Where it breaks down: anything that needs inside knowledge of your specific customer, a strong distinctive brand voice, or real storytelling. AI writes competent generic copy. The human job is knowing what makes this business different and editing that in. That part does not go away.

One thing you can do this week

Pick one piece of marketing copy you have been putting off. An email you have been meaning to send. A social post you keep drafting and deleting. A follow-up you know you should have sent last month.

Write a brief for it. Three sentences:

Open Claude.ai or ChatGPT. Both have free tiers. You will need to create an account, but it takes two minutes and costs nothing. Paste your three sentences and ask it to write the copy.

Read what comes back. It will probably be close but slightly off. Fix the one or two things that are wrong, cut anything that sounds like AI wrote it, and send.

The whole thing should take less than fifteen minutes. That is the point.
